Antiguan Talent Making Its Mark in England

The new football season has got off to a fantastic start for a number of our Antiguan players competing in England, with goals, strong performances and important results already coming across several of the programmes we work with.

From school football to academy competition, our players have wasted little time in showing what they can do on the pitch — while also beginning to settle into life and football in a new environment.

For young footballers making the move from Antigua & Barbuda to England, the opportunity is about much more than simply playing matches. It is about experiencing a different footballing environment, competing against new opposition, adapting to life overseas and continuing to develop both on and off the pitch.

The early signs have been extremely encouraging.

Strong Start for the Ackworth Trio

At Ackworth School, Greg Williams, Ethan Camacho and Joshua James have made an immediate impact.

The trio helped Ackworth to a convincing 6–1 victory in the ISFA Boodles Cup, with Greg producing a standout performance to score a hat-trick, while Ethan also found the back of the net. Joshua also put in a strong all-round performance as the Antiguan trio played an important role in the result.

The three then featured in a 2–0 victory over PSG West Midlands, with Greg getting on the scoresheet once again.

It has been an excellent start for the boys, who are continuing to adapt to English football while making their presence felt on the pitch.

Antiguan Players Making an Impact at Steven Gerrard Academy

There has also been plenty to celebrate at Steven Gerrard Academy, where Malik Charles, Jonathan Shoy, Jermarion Edwards, Josue Arias and Dejarnie Moore have all been making their mark.

The group made an explosive start to the season, helping the Academy to a 9–1 victory in their opening game. Malik Charles scored a hat-trick, while Josue Arias and Jermarion Edwards also found the net.

The strong performances have continued in the games since, with the Antiguan players once again playing an important role in a thrilling 5–5 draw against the University of Liverpool First Team.

Jonathan Shoy produced an outstanding performance, scoring a hat-trick, while Malik Charles and Josue Arias also got on the scoresheet.

For young players making the move from Antigua & Barbuda to England, opportunities to compete against university first-team opposition provide valuable experience and another chance to test themselves in a different footballing environment.

With regular updates coming from Steven Gerrard Academy, it has been fantastic to see the group continuing to contribute, compete and develop as the season progresses.

More Than Just Results

For these young players, the move to England represents a significant step in their footballing journey.

Training and competing within a professional-style academy environment, facing new opponents and learning from experienced coaches all form part of the development process.

The goals and results naturally provide moments to celebrate, but the wider experience is equally important.

Every game brings another opportunity to learn, adapt and improve — and the early performances from our players suggest they are embracing that challenge.

Antiguan Women Making Their Mark Too

The progress hasn’t been limited to the men’s game.

Ajahna Martin and Abisha Henry have also been representing Antigua & Barbuda at Steven Gerrard Academy, helping the team to an impressive 3–1 victory over Bolton.

Their involvement is another positive step for Antiguan female footballers looking to develop their game overseas and gain valuable experience within a competitive football environment in England.

It is particularly encouraging to see opportunities like this continuing to open up for young women from Antigua & Barbuda and to see them representing themselves and their country on the international stage.

Positive Start at Brooke House College

There has also been an encouraging start for our Antiguan players at Brooke House College, with Joshua Henriques already making his presence felt.

Joshua recently found the back of the net against Kettering Town, providing an excellent early highlight to his season and a positive start as he continues his development in England.

Meanwhile, Vaughn has yet to return to Brooke House following his recent call-up to the Antigua & Barbuda national team.

For Vaughn, the opportunity to represent his country adds another important dimension to his development and is another significant experience in his footballing journey.

It has been a positive opening period for both players, and we look forward to seeing them continue to develop and make the most of their opportunities throughout the season.

A Promising Start Across England

While it is still early in the season, the opening weeks have already provided plenty of reasons to be proud.

Across schools and football academies in England, young players from Antigua & Barbuda are competing, scoring goals and contributing to their teams.

Giving young footballers the opportunity to experience football overseas, continue their education and challenge themselves in a new environment can be a hugely important step in their development.

The transition isn’t always easy. Moving away from home, adapting to a different style of football and settling into a completely new environment all present challenges.

But seeing our players embrace those challenges — and then seeing them rewarded with goals, victories, strong performances and even opportunities to represent their country — makes these moments particularly special.

We are incredibly proud of the way our players have approached the start of the season and grateful to the schools, academies, coaches and staff supporting them along the way.

There is still a long season ahead, but the early signs are exciting.

The journey has only just begun.
